Areas of research

Fundamental research

The aim of the CERIJE is to build and develop fundamental research in legal translatology (or juritranslatology).

For that purpose the centre’s work will focus on two main areas of research:

- Defining its object of study, referred to as "juritranslatology", by describing, analysing and theorising the matter to be translated and the translated matter, such matter belonging to the field of law and used by the law.

- Enumerating and analysing, without academic barriers, translation-related policies in the contexts of international, regional and national law. Why is legal translation necessary in the various contexts? What norms have been established and what functions are attributed to the different legal translations? Is there a right to language assistance for all citizens (parties to legal proceedings, consumers, workers, hospital patients, etc.) and in particular persons with hearing or speech impediments?

Our fundamental research in translatology will lead to practical application.

Applied research

The objective here is to improve the quality of legal translations through comparative law studies. In practical terms, the CERIJE, with the benefit of close collaboration between comparative-law scholars and translatologists:

- will carry out comparative studies of legal concepts presenting translation difficulties in order to propose standardised translation solutions;

- will compile a legal translation database, freely accessible via our website, in order to improve the quality of legal and court translations.

Our applied research is a reflection of the centre’s interactive and contribution-based approach.
